Tower 12

OPENED 1157 DAYS AGO

Tower 12 is a casual restaurant and bar at Hermosa Beach, with uninhibited views of the ocean.

Chef Brendan Collins, a Hollywood favorite, is behind Tower 12 and its California-modern cuisine.

The Spot:

One of L.A.’s best new places to eat and drink can be found on Pier Avenue, in a second-story space that includes two bars. There are three main rooms and a wraparound balcony connecting them; one of the bars opens out onto the balcony. The interior embodies the beachy hostel vibe: comfortable mismatched furniture, exposed beams, artistic photography framed on the walls, patterned rugs scattered around. They host game nights, karaoke and live performances by local bands.

The Food:

Their menu is the very definition of casual dining. Think salad, soup, pizza and burgers, along with barbecue plates and “American classics” like chicken pot pie. You might start with a starter to share, like the cauliflower tempura, the garlic blue shrimp served with sourdough, or the cheese steak poppers. You can build your own charcuterie board with a selection of cured meets, artisan cheeses and breads, or trust the chef to put one together for you.

Of the mains, the burgers catch the eye right away. The house burger is simple: it contains American cheese, honey dijonaise, diced red onion and pickles on a toasted sesame bun. But you’re not limited to beef. Among several alternatives are the fried chicken burger and a “banh mi” burger with ahi tuna.

The Drinks:

Tower 12‘s diverse beverage offering includes wine, draft beer, ciders, and even 48-oz bowls for sharing. The cocktails list alone is almost as extensive as the food menu.

While you’ll notice two kinds of margaritas, a Bloody Mary, and Tower 12‘s take on the Old Fashioned, you’ll also find some creative and even whimsical choices. The Iron Man, for one, is a 4-oz double shot that comes served in a flask, containing bourbon, fruit liqueurs and orange bitters. The Naughty Mermaid contains peach vodka, amaretto, yellow chartreuse, lemon juice and maraschino cherry.

But if you’re there with a big group, try ordering the Mai Mule – with vodka, lime juice, ginger beer and orange curacao – in a 90-oz, “flaming (literally)” volcano bowl.

The Damage:

Starters, soup and salads go for $8-16. Most of the mains, including pizza and burgers, cost $11-17, but certain dishes will stretch your wallet a little thinner, like the scallops for $29 or the miso-glazed salmon for $23. Cocktails range from $10-13, while a pint of beer costs about $6-8.

In a Nutshell:

Tower 12 has all the trappings of the perfect beachside bar and restaurant. Its bright, warm and comfortable space invites guests to relax while they enjoy some good, hearty comfort food.

L.A.’s latest restaurant and bar openings also include Bluegold LSXO and O+O Sicilian Kitchen.
